Are you one of those creative types who are always coming up with new ideas for your business? Do you wake up with new products and services flowing through your mind faster than you can get them written down?
Is your answer “Yes! That’s me.”?
Today I want to look at some of the ways you can use that creativity to strengthen your business. I have known many people who have no difficulty coming up with new ideas. Their problem is that once they have the idea and they’ve mentioned it to one or more people, then in their mind it is complete.
Unfortunately, they are left with a baby who is birthed, but not nurtured into maturity. A baby left on its own, unless it has the capacity to yell and scream and grab your attention, will never flourish.
When this happens two things occur. First, the product doesn’t get out to our clients. It doesn’t serve them or us. It doesn’t bring in the credibility or the income that we had visualized in connection with it.
Second, it becomes easy to get down on ourselves for failing to follow through on yet another project that was full of promise. I don’t know about you, but when I start focusing on the ideas I have dropped along the way I tend to get caught up in the ‘not enough’ syndrome.
I get upset with myself for breaking another promise I made to myself. I start feeling inadequate. I have to work harder to motivate myself to keep up with the activities that I know will benefit my business.
How do we turn this around? What are some initial ways to nurture our new baby idea?
First, set aside some time to really consider the idea. Ask yourself (and your idea) some of the following questions:
- Does this potential product or service meet a want or need of my ideal client?
- Does it fit logically into my current portfolio of products and services?
- Does it take my business into a new direction? Is this something I really want to do right now or is this an excuse to split my attention away from my current central focus?
Next, if this is the right time to proceed with nurturing and developing this product, it is time to look at some of the more practical questions.
- Do I need more information to develop a powerful product?
- Do I have the time (or the money to hire someone else) to do the necessary research?
- What components will go into my product or service?
- Will it be a physical product or a virtual one? Print, audio, and/or video?
- How much of my time will be required to prepare the product?
- How much of my time will be required to fulfill the product – none, some interaction in a Facebook or other group, one or more hours a month in one-on-one or group time with the clients who purchase the product or service?
There are a lot of pluses to adding products to your business.
- Added credibility and authority.
- A way to serve more clients in the same number or fewer hours.
- Additional income, either directly through an associated fee or indirectly by drawing more people to you and your services.
You’ve decided the time is right to add a new product or service. You have some initial ideas as to how to get started. Are you aware of the necessary steps to actually get it all done?
Most types of product creation require your direct involvement. The content represents you and the way you work with your clients. Audios and videos should have you and your voice, not someone else’s. However, the probability is that you won’t want to do all of the nitty gritty involved with outlining and scheduling the work.
Most of us can’t edit or proofread our own materials – we are just too close to them.
- What is on the page and in our heads gets confused.
- Information that may be critical to our clients is left out because it is so basic to us that we think everyone knows it.
- Our intentions are good but the time to work on our own project slips away because direct work for a client (and another … and anther) takes priority.
