A regular reminder of mine is to look at my big why for having my own business. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day busy-ness of our business and lose sight of why we started it in the first place. Yet when we lose that inspiration we also tend to limit our movement toward that big why.
In looking back at what I have written in the past, much of it still holds true. What about you?
Why did you start your business?
- To serve others?
- To be your own boss?
- To make money?
If you look deep enough you will probably find a reason very similar to mine.
To be free.
- To be free to make your own decisions and set your own priorities.
- To be free to do things your way.
- To be free to write your own rules.
And looking a little deeper.
- To be free to spend more time with your family.
- To be free to do what you want to when you want to.
- To see an area of need and just write a check to help without checking the balance first.
And to spur action with your why, also identify a specific family trip, project, or area of need that you want to accomplish right now.
- A family reunion
- A new home
- A local classroom that needs books for its library
Are you leading a life filled with freedom? Are you able to follow all of the possibilities you were dreaming of when you left your job and started your business?
If you are like me, you have achieved a few of those goals but most of them still feel a long way off – more like dreams than goals.
How do you get to the far side, to the freedom that was part of your motivation for starting a business in the first place?
One way is by co-creating a structure for sharing your vision with someone who can help you identify the most important things for you to be doing. When we get immersed in the busy-ness of business we can lose track of our priorities.
When you are ready to move beyond one-on-one client work, it can be useful to work with a strategist who can help you identify next steps and keep you on track. This is one of my strengths in working with visionaries who are ready to share their message through books.
We spend some time identifying what you want to do, your current struggles in completing these things, and the steps and resources involved to achieve your goals. Then we co-create a preliminary timetable for getting the work done.
Once completed, your book is one more tool to bring you the freedom you are looking for. It can bring you additional money thru your website and/or sales at the back of the room. Of equal or more value to you is the additional credibility you will acquire as an author.
