The Treasures Found in Goal Setting and Planning

Where are you today?butterfly treasure map

Where do you want to be a year from now?

What difference does it make to create goals and plans?

Think of it like heading out on a trip with no destination in mind and no map to guide the way. For the first hour or two, perhaps even the first day or two of a vacation, the adventures inherent in this kind of trip can be fun.

After a few days, if you are like most of us, you will start feeling the frustration that comes with wondering where you are, what you have accomplished, and why are you doing this anyway.

An easy way to put some global plans in place is to create a treasure map or vision board. When we do this we pick several aspects of our lives to focus on –

  • Spiritual growth and understanding [colors: yellow or white]
  • Health, energy, and vitality [colors: orange or bright yellow]
  • Love, harmony, marriage, and happiness in human relationships, family, and home [colors: pink, rose, or warm red]
  • Finances, fortune, job, career and money [colors: green or gold]
  • Intellectual accomplishments, book writing, degrees, schooling [color; blue]

Think about specific things you would like to accomplish in the next year.

Find pictures and words in magazines that express those things.

Create a design and start gluing.

Here are some samples. I generally create some type of graphic and write words on it. A friend created a treasure map solely from magazine clippings.

You can do this on your own or with a group.

For several years while we lived in Elmira, NY, we would get together with friends on New Year’s Eve to celebrate and create our Treasure Maps for the next year. We had an even broader selection of magazines to look through.

My oldest sister, Judy Ott, has used the feng shui bagua map to organize her map. Others have used a wheel of life and focused on the areas where they want to make changes in the next year.

Wheel-of-LifeThe important thing is to find a format that resonates with you and move forward.

After you complete your Treasure Map put it in a place where you can see it easily every day. The more you look at it and review the words and images it contains, the sooner you will find these things reflected in your life.

One of my basic beliefs is that the more you think about something, the more it will appear in your life. If you focus on the positive, the positive is what you will create.
