I’ve been a member of the DAR (National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution) for four years. At our chapter meeting last week we had a speaker who truly loved his topic. Randall Jones told us several stories about Daniel Boone, frontier hero. Contrary to the image most of us have of him wearing a coonskin cap, he never wore one and actually loathed them.
It was obvious from the way Randall spoke that he truly enjoyed his topic. He published his first book on Daniel Boone, In the Footsteps of Daniel Boone, in 2005. He has written five additional books since then on Daniel and related topics.
I didn’t have an opportunity to interview him but just listening to him talk about his topic and reading his biography I can make some assumptions about him. He spoke for over an hour infusing his talk with a mix of dramatic stories and a mixture of dates and descriptions of different places he had lived over the years. He talked about Daniel’s family in detail and shared information about a book titled My Blessed, Wretched Life, a biography of his wife of 57 years.
Randall lives near Winston-Salem, NC, one of the areas Daniel and his family lived in for while. Randall is past-president of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association and works closely with the National Park Service in promoting the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.
This is a man who became so intrigued by his topic that he literally followed the paths and trails blazed by the people he wrote about.
I’ve mentioned in the past that you want to write about a topic you are in love with, that you will be willing to live with for the rest of your life. Randall Jones is a person who has done that.
As you think about writing your book ask yourself and your friends: What topic(s) can I talk about for hours without getting tired or running out of things to say? You may need to do additional research while working on your book. However, if it is a topic you enjoy you will enjoy this process as much or more than the writing.
